22 April, 2017    Andy Rowe

St Leonards A have become Division 2A champions after a remarkable run of results, and in so doing pushed long term leaders Queens B into 2nd place. They ended the season on 99 points, with the only games lost being to Queens B.
The Saints team of Sue Banks, Tom Phillips, Kay Brewer, Adrian Midmer, Louise Gubbin and Tim Wardale beat Ringswell B 9-0.
Nikki Anslow replaced Louise for the trip to Chulmleigh, and again the team came away with another superb 9-0 win.
Louise returned for the final 2 matches, and the team made it 4 9-0 wins on the bounce with stunning wins over Otter Vale A and Chulmleigh.
It was a great team achievement, with Tom Phillips deserving of a special mention of going through the season unbeaten.
The Queens B team of Jenny Maddison, Nathan Scase, Kate Povey, Ben Herbert, Hannah Partridge and Sam Clarke completed their campaign with a 9-0 win over St Leonards B to guarantee them the runners up spot.
Chulmleigh rang the changes for their match against St Leonards B and were deserving 7-2 winners – their first and only win of the season. Michelle Wylde and Matt Hamill led the way with 3 wins, with the other pairings of Karen Parish/Jake Rice and Kackie Anderson/Mat Older both bagging a brace of wins. The Saints reserves of Laura Britton and Ann Trevena, partnered by Andy Rowe and John Gubbin respectively, picked up one win apiece.
St Leonards B ended their season with a hard fought 7-2 win over Otter Vale A. Nikki Anslow and John Gubbin led the way with 3 wins for the Saints, with the other pairings of Jess Hand/Malcolm Travis and Ruth McClelland/Andy Rowe winning 2. Otter Vale’s points came courtesy of Jo Smith and Dan Clark. Play was interrupted by a court invading ladybird, with special mention going to Dave Williamson for saving the bug.

In Division 1, Exeter B picked up their 4th win of the season to secure 3rd spot. They beat Ringswell A 6-3 – It was a team performance with all pairs – Rowan Despard/Geoff Littler, Theresa Ford/Callum Owens and Stacey Horn/Tim Warrener – collecting 2 wins apiece.

Division 2 B winners St Leonards C completed their season with a superb  6-3 victory over runners up Honiton A. Sharon May and Dan Cordey were on song for the Saints and notched up 3 wins, with great support from Rachel Marson/Leo Robbins (2) and Anne Trevena/Chris Wardale (1). Captain Sharon May, reflecting on her teams success, said  “ All the Ladies, boys as well, have done the team proud this season and we are looking forward to the challenge of Division 2A next season”.
