Sidmouth have early season shocker

Sidmouth’s defence of their Division 1 title looks decidely wobbly after 2 defeats on the trot.  Sidmouth were missing key players for a variety of reasons which meant that they had to dig deep into their reserves to field 6 players for their match against Exeter A. Exeter A were almost at full strength and all 3 of their pairs – Dave Spencer/Shaun Roberts, Rob Flack/John Phillips and Pete Ford/Alex Bulley – picked up 2 wins apiece to secure a 6 – 3 win. All 3 Exeter pairs lost to the Sidmouth No1 pair Harry Williams and Owen Waters.

John Carter and Callum Owens came into the Sidmouth team for their match against Ringswell. However Ringswell  impressed with a 7-2 win with 3 wins for Ian Walsh/Nigel Osborne and 2 apiece for Steve Ford/Adrian Freeman and Andy Taylor/Barry Harriss.

St Leonards A had a last gasp 5-4 win over Ringswell A.  The Saints Dan Carson and  ex Ringswell player Tony Clarke starred with 3 wins but with the Ringswell pair of Nigel Osborne and Ian Walsh winning 2, the match was poised at 4-4 going into the final rubber. Vernon Smeed and supersub Sam Maltby prevailed for the Saints, winning 21-14, 19-21,21-12 over Andy Taylor and Barry Harriss, to secure the win for St Leonards.

In Division 2 the St Leonards B team of Sam Maltby,  Adrian Wijay,  Andy Rowe,  Adrian Midmer, Malcolm Travis and reserve Chris Wardale ran out 9 -0 winners in their in house derby over St Leonards C

St Leonards C picked themselves up from this defeat to notch up their first win of the season -  a hard fought 5-4 win over newly promoted Chulmleigh B. The Saints pair of Ant Towl and Chris Wardale won all 3, with Allister Brimble/Barry Smethurst and Dave Meakin/Martin Matthews picking up 1 win each.  Chulmleigh’s points came courtesy of Joe Court/Harry Elsom (2) and Matt Adcock/Ashley Marshall (2)

Exeter B ran out 7-2 winners against Exeter C, thanks to 3 wins from Matt Whyman/Chris Bradley and a brace of wins from John Collar/Alex Bulley and Allister Banks/Tim Ellis. Tom Laver and Tim Howard salvaged the 2 points for the C team.

In Division 3, the Otter Vale in-house derby went the way of the B team 6-3. Chris Smith and Mark Brown led the way with 3 wins, with the C team pairing of Max Walker and Jack Challinor impressing with 2 wins.

Exeter D have started their campaign with a win and a losses.  They started with a narrow 5-4 defeat to Honiton. Honiton’s Kevin Greenwell and Ben Taylor were in fine form and fully deserving of their 3 wins, ably supported by Simon Walker and Roger Tucker (2).
