A 3 horse race to the Div 3A title

The race to the Mens Division 3A title is hotting up with 3 teams, Otter Vale B, St Leonards D and Chulmleigh, in contention.

Otter Vale lead the way with 44 points from 6 matches. The Ottery team of Tom Bennett, Tim Hall, Simon Witts, Andy O’Brien, David Williamson and Callum Williamson had a hard fought 8-1 win over Exeter D, with several of the games being won or lost by only a couple of points.

St Leonards D remain on Otter Vale’s coat tails. They are 5 points behind but with a match in hand, after a 7-2 win over Exeter D. Exeter could only field 2 pairs for the match, with the Torres brothers, Anton and Carlos, bagging a brace of wins. The Saints top pair of Lee Clatworthy and Barry Smethurst were unbeaten.

In Division 2, Exeter C now have 3 wins from 6 matches after they beat relegation threatened St Leonards C 5-4. Rami Yedidi and Jason Pang starred for St Leonards with 3 wins, but a consistent all round performance from the Exeter team of Jeremy Smith, Prakash Kripakaran, Tom Laver, Ed Choi, Anton Torres and Chris Bradley sealed the win for them.

St Leonards C bounced back to record only their 2nd win of the season in beating Otter Vale A 8-1. Barry Smethurst starred for the saints, showing all his skill, nous and tactical awareness, in winning all 3 with his partner Allister Brimble. Jason Peng and Matthew Kwung also came away with 3 wins. Otter Vale’s James Burgess and Tom Bennett salvaged a point for their team.

Sidmouth are now odds-on favourites to win Division 1, following wins over both Exeter A and Exeter B. They beat Exeter A 7-2, with the pair of Dan Corby/Dan Harris on song with 3 wins, and the other 2 pairs of John Carter/Martyn Schmidt and Owen Waters/Harry Williams winning 2 each. Dave Spencer and Sam Lees were once again the top pair for Exeter with 2 wins.

Sidmouth rang the changes for their 9-0 win over Exeter B, with Chris Bird and Paul Owens replacing Dan Harris and Harry Williams.

Queens struggled to raise a team for their Saturday night match against a makeshift St Leonards A, who themselves had  to field 3 reserves in their team. Queens only had 4 players on the night, but unfortunately one of those was unregistered, giving St Leonards their best result of the season – a 9-0 win.

Queens were back to their near normal team for their 7-2 win over Exeter B. Nathan Scase and Ben Jordan along with Ben Hussey and Jamie Dawe picked up 3 wins apiece. Exeter’s Rob Flack/Alex Bulley and John Collar/Tim Howard rescued a point each in beating Queens Lloyd Skinner and Rob Hatcher.

St Leonards A are flying high in second place following a 6-3 win over Ringswell A. Once again the Saints top pair of Zac Phillips and Charles Wardale came away with 3 wins and new boy Dan Carson
